Bomb/Bomb Threat or Suspicious Object

A staff member might receive a threatening telephone call, receive a threatening letter, receive a suspicious parcel in the mail, or discover a suspicious object somewhere on the premises.

If you receive a TELEPHONE THREAT:

1.             Remain calm. Your calm behavior can have a positive influence on those around you.

2.           Listen carefully. Be polite and show interest. Try to keep the caller talking so you can gather more information. Please do not hang up on the caller.

3.           Fill out the Bomb Threat Card under each phone as you are talking to the caller.

4.           NOTIFY SECURITY IN PERSON; DO NOT USE THE TWO-WAY RADIO, PHONE OR CELL PHONE.

5.           Do not call the police yourself. Security will notify the appropriate law enforcement and public safety agencies.

6.           Do not discuss the threat with other staff.

7.           Be guided by Security or your Department Head. If an evacuation is ordered, go to the designated area at the Children’s Tile Plaza (under the library awning if it is raining).

If you receive a WRITTEN THREAT, SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE or if you find a SUSPICIOUS OBJECT:

1.             Keep anyone from handling the parcel or going near it.

2.           NOTIFY SECURITY IN PERSON; DO NOT USE THE TWO-WAY RADIO, PHONE OR CELL PHONE.

3.           Do not call the police yourself. Security will notify appropriate law enforcement and public safety agencies.

4.           Promptly write down everything you can remember about receiving the letter or parcel or finding the object. Law enforcement will need this information.

5.           Remain calm. Do not spread rumors or discuss the threat with other staff members.

6.           Be guided by Security or your Department Head. If an evacuation is ordered, go to the designated area at the Children’s Tile Plaza (under the library awning if it is raining).

If an evacuation is ordered, wait at the Children’s Tile Plaza until given further instructions.
